Special Blend Predatory Mite Mix

For when you can see damage but cannot name the pest. Special Blend is four predatory mites in equal quarters — Amblyseius andersoni, Neoseiulus californicus, Amblyseius swirskii and Amblyseius cucumeris — and between them they cover spider mites, thrips, whitefly, broad and cyclamen mites, and the russet and rust mites almost nothing else will touch. One bottle, no diagnosis required.

It is also the easiest thing in the catalogue to actually use. Nothing to mix, nothing to spray, no residue on the leaves and no re-entry interval — you shake it over the foliage and leave it. The mites head for the undersides and the tight new growth where the pests are and where a spray never lands, they find them without your help, and no pest develops resistance to being eaten. Safe around people, pets and anything you plan to eat.

This is the bottle, which means adults released now, for pressure you can already see. The Special Blend sachets are the same four species as a slow release over four to six weeks, for prevention and for holding ground once an outbreak is broken.

Best for: Mixed pest pressure, or damage you cannot confidently identify.
How many: Sizes go by plant count in 6" pots. Under heavy pressure take one size up, and plan a second release 7–14 days later to catch the eggs the first one missed.
Arrives as: A shaker bottle of loose mites through a vermiculite and bran carrier. They are under half a millimetre — not seeing movement does not mean they are not alive. Deploy the day it arrives; there is no holding option.
Conditions: Aim for 60% humidity or higher. If the room is drier than that, the canopy is not — the microclimate under the leaves runs 10–15% more humid than the room air, which is also exactly where the pests are.
Safe around: People, pets, plants and food crops.
Not for: A single confirmed heavy problem, where the specialist is faster — two-spotted spider mites with webbing are persimilis or Spider Mite Rapid Response, and thrips alone are cucumeris or swirskii. If you want more predators of fewer species, that is Ultimate Control.

The Science: Meet the Four

This blend utilizes functional biodiversity. By combining four generalist predators with different climate tolerances and different favourite prey, we cover multiple trophic niches, temperature ranges, and pest life stages.

The Workhorse: Neoseiulus californicus

• The Role: The durable spider mite hunter.

• The Science: Californicus goes after Two-Spotted Spider Mites, broad mites and cyclamen mites, and it tolerates drier, warmer air better than the other predatory mites we carry. It also persists on pollen and alternative prey when the pest population crashes, so it does not disappear the moment it wins.

The Heavy Hitter: Amblyseius swirskii

• The Role: The warm-weather warrior.

• The Science: A voracious Type III generalist predator. Swirskii dominates in warmer, humid environments, aggressively consuming thrips larvae and whitefly eggs. It is the muscle of the group.

The Scout: Neoseiulus cucumeris

• The Role: The pollen-loving patroller.

• The Science: This mite thrives on thrips larvae but can survive on pollen when prey is scarce, allowing it to establish a preventative population before an infestation even begins. It provides the "standing army" effect.

The All-Weather One: Amblyseius andersoni

• The Role: The one still on shift when the room swings.

• The Science: Andersoni stays active from 43°F to 100°F and does not go dormant on short days, so cold nights, heat spikes and a shortening season do not take it off the plant. It hunts spider, broad and cyclamen mites alongside the others — and it is the only one of the four that preys on russet and rust mites, which are eriophyids and a different job entirely.
